"Your Body" (Bad Boy Bill, JJ Flores & Steve Smooth Remix) - Tom Novy
Label: Kosmo
“Your Body” by Tom Novy was released in early 2005 and took the club world by storm via the remix done by Andy Van. Now it's getting re-released on Novy’s own label Kosmo this summer. While we haven’t gotten a hold of the full details of the release, we have gotten a hold of the mix done by Steve Smooth, JJ Flores and Bad Boy Bill and if its any indication of what this package will hold this re-release will be HUGE.
Getting away from the original's ‘80’s disco sample and using only the vocal hook (courtesy of Micheal Marshall); Steve, JJ, and Bill have crafted what is sure to be a dance floor bomb! With an infectious electro backdrop this mix is pounding from front to back; strong kicks and airing fx carry this track, allowing the vocal to shine through and set this mix off proper. With a break down that is perfect for the peak hour madness yet combined with a light texture, this one that will work well at any point in your set.
When three of the biggest names in House music get together to remix one of the biggest tracks in House, you can bet it will be massive. Dance floors beware of the resurrection.

"Dacnin" - Aaron Smith
Label: Data Records
Hot on the heels of Studio B's 'I See Girls' one of the biggest and best selling dance tracks of the year so far is ‘Dancin’ by Aaron Smith. ‘Dancin’ has been floating around for while now and due to the massive demand for it Boss Records are finally giving it a full release through Ministry/Data.
In order for the track to reach it’s full potential we’ve enlisted the help of one of music’s most talented engineers Dave Bascombe to work on the radio edit. Dave’s prestigious engineeering / mixing career boasts an impressive CV of high profile artists such as Depeche Mode, Placebo and Tears for Fears and most recently he has worked on albums for Goldfrapp, Moby & Soulwax.
Aaron Smith is a long time stalwart in the house music scene, born, bred and plying his trade ever since in the birthplace of house Chicago. Originally part of the legendary production trio UBQ Project alongside house legends Ron Trent and Terry Hunter their productions rapidly gained a great reputation amongst the global house community and led to Aaron remixing 90's dance acts Shawn Christopher, Ten City and Zhane and major artists including Mary J Blige and Michael Jackson.
Dancin' was originally released on Moody Records from Chicago, it sold steadily on import during the latter half of 2004. It's a unique track that has found supporters across the board, from the cooler house heads to the more commercial jobbing DJs. International globe trotting jocks Pete Tong and Roger Sanchez love it, whilst established house institutions Subliminal, Hed Kandi and Defected have given it their stamp of approval. Dancin' is a staple part of any DJ’s set at all the regular UK house clubs Moneypennys, Gods Kitchen, Garlands, Kiss da Funk and more.
It’s been sung and co written by Luvli, another Chicago resident who's distinct and characteristic vocals really set this track apart from its contemporaries. Its swingin vibe has become a sing a long anthem, with club crowds singing back its memorable chorus to the DJ. This real clubbers favourite has been played on every regional radio dance show this year. Such is its nationwide popularity the act performed Dancin' live at Radio 1’s Global Gathering broadcast.
Remixes so far have come from Italy's Fuzzy Hair, UK's Soulshaker and Mike Di Scala. It’s the Chicago home boys JJ Flores and Steve Smooth’s remix that has grabbed most of the attentionso far, but new mixes come from Brad Carter and Lil’ Love.

This Might Be The Craziest Weekend In Our History
How about those WHITE SOX! Best of luck to you guys in Houston tonight, it sure would be nice to be celebrate a White Sox World Series Championship Wednesday Night at Reserve. What a crazy night that would be. Well let's not jinx them and get too excited yet, but boy I would love to host that party. Anyway looking back on the past week we had great four days of parties. In fact, all of our events we as busy or busier than they normally are. We had a great start to the weekend at Reserve on Wednesday, kind of a late start, but a very good finish. Level on Thursday was possibly our best Thursday Night in our history. J.J. Flores put on a great show and had the crowd going until close. Steve Smooth jumped on the decks for a while and we even had Delano sang "Release" live. If you at other places in Chicago on Thursday, we are sorry because you missed one heck of a night. Friday we also had one of our better nights at Wet the place got going around 12:30 and actually st! ayed very busy right up until close. Moda was also on track this week with special guest DJ KCJ rocking the decks we had a solid night. Finally, the Silver Party in Kansas City was this past Saturday at Kabal. What a great party, a ton of great silver attire and a phenomenal after party that I am still feeling. "Time For Love"
JJ Flores & Steve Smooth
Slick, sexy, main room electro-infused house from this dynamic Chicago production duo. "Time For Love" blends lush synth passes with thick kicks, and a very catchy vocoded hook. While not as uber stomping as past releases, the cut still has that big room feel to it, and the smoothness of the sound will lend itself to a broader range of DJs. Yet another solid release from Flores and Smooth.

"B Like Me"
JJ Flores and Steve Smooth are back once again with a killer electro-fied house joint. Alex Peace's vocals reflect a Lenny Kravitz sort of feel over the twisting 303-inspired twisted and punching beats. For me the remix steps the intensity up and makes a bigger impact for the dancefloor. Regardless it's another solid release from JJ & Steve.

Release
I loved this track the second I heard it. This track is a straight-forward party rocker that takes no prisoners with its dirty, grungy bass line, tight compression and floor-rocking beats. The vocal suggests the crowd "release," which is pretty bold if you do not have the goods to back it up. This has the goods though, and then some.

Interview for www.freedomnightclub.com
your first encounter with your love for music??
SS: When I was just graduating from grammar school my cousin gave me a mix tape. Some songs I was familiar with and some I wasn't. It was just interesting to hear the way all the songs where mixed together without pauses between them. From that point on I just Knew I had to do something like that...
How old were you when u touched your first set of decks?
SS: I was able to get my 1st set of decks when I was about 14. But they didn't have pitch controls. I didn't even know you needed pitch controls for the first couple years. I didn't know anybody who liked to DJ except for my boy Louie. It was just me and him. We would do all the house parties in the neighborhood with turntables with no pitch. I would hate to hear what my mixes sounded like back then. When I was about 18 I finally got enough money to buy turntables with a pitch control. That is when it all made sense to me. From that point on I just got better.
Now that sounds like that was rough to learn that way. I bet all of that helped you even more once you got some tables with pitch control. Do you remember you first record you ever bought?
SS: The 1st record I bought to start DJing with was called Dreams Of Santa Anna. It was a techno record. I didn't even have a turntable yet to play it on but I knew I would soon
Where was the first place you played out at? Besides house parties?
SS: The 1st place I ever played out besides for a house party was at a KFC Hall. Nobody knew who I was so I had to throw the party with my boy Louie. So I basically booked my self. But we still needed a big name to pull people. So we booked the biggest name in Chicago, Bad Boy Bill. The party was a success. From that point on we just keep doing our own parties until people knew who we where.
Speaking of Bad Boy Bill how is it touring with him.? Sorry to get off subject with that one.
SS: It is great touring with him. We always are just having fun doing what we love.
How did u hook up going on tour with him?
SS: I meet Bill through the Chicago circuit. Then at the beginning of 2000 Bill asked me to help work around the studio. A few months later I went with Bill to a few cities to tour manage. From that point on it turned into a permanent job for the past 2 years. Then at the beginning of this year (2002) Bill asked me to be his opening DJ while Bo Basic handles all the tour managing. So of course I jumped at the chance.
How much of a influence did Bad Boy Bill and other Chicago dj's have on you?
SS: Every DJ in Chicago during the era I grew up in was basically influenced by BBB and Julian Perez. I worked at a record store called Jumpin Muzik which was owned by Julian Perez. People would just come in and ask for the records that they played in there mixes on the weekends. They had that a lot of influence on the music.
Who has been your biggest supporter? Or influence in the scene?
SS: I would have to say everyone that works and has ever worked at Mix Connection which is the company that runs International House Records and Moody Recordings.
Ok Now that we know a little bit about you time for some other stuff. What did you think of Arizona?
SS: The vibe was great. I have been to Arizona many times, but have never played myself. So I wasn't sure what to expect. But they showed me mad love. After my set I had so many people thanking me for playing, I should be thanking them for letting me do what I love to do.
I remember hearing nothing but good things about your set for awhile after you played.
How do you prepare for a set?
SS: I really don't do a whole lot. I already have in mind what I am going to play. Then I will make some changes during my set depending on what the crowd is feeling.
So you don't have a planned set then or you mainly go by how the crowd is?
SS: It's about half and half. There are some records I know I'm just gonna play and there are some I just end up playing cause I think the crowd will like it.
Well I only have a few more questions, I'm sure you are very busy. Do you have a favorite track that you spin in all your sets?
SS: Right now my favorite track that I always have to play is Sting Me by Who Da Funk. But I know it will change in a few weeks. I am always getting a new favorite record.
Records you never leave home without?
SS: I will never leave home without Take me Higher by CZR.
Favorite place to play?
SS:I have a few right now. I really enjoyed playing at Avalon in Boston, Eleven 50 in Atlanta and Dockland in Germany.
Nice I have seen the layout of Eleven 50 and to say the least I was in Awe.
SS: The club had a great atmosphere. Plus they just went off to my music.
So where can anyone go to learn anything else about you and maybe pick of a cd or hear some of the tracks you have produced?
SS: www.stevesmooth.com Has some info on me and you can listen to the tracks that I have produced.
Well Steve wanna thank you for doing this interview with me its much appreciated.
SS: Thank you for doing it.

"Time"
Kid Dynamite
Dajae drops yet another sneak peak at her new album due out later his year on Kid Dynamite Records. "time" is a mature look at Dajae's progression into Vocal superstardom. E-Smoove's original track is a live type mix with live guitars and percussion. The theme of the song "we got so much Time to live, so much love to give" echo's through out. This song has not only heart but a huge melody that is going to stick. Chicago based producer Steve Smooth makes his debut with a disco dub mix that puts "time" into high gear. This flangy disco track offers a complimentary alternative to the original. Due out later this summer are remixes of "Time" by Rush, Steve Smooth, and Dean Coleman, with a special mix dedicate to the memory of veteran Billboard reporter, DJ, and inspiration Stuart Gardner. Dajae's voice has never sounded better and this 12 inch is definitely going to be hot. The buzz on "Time" started even before WMC so get them while you can.

In Chicago, Jermane Britton formerly of Cajual and R-Senal Records has opened the doors to Kid Dynamite Records, which is distributed by Dust Traxx Inc. The label, which will focus on all things house, debuts Sept. 5 with Dajae's "Time." The E-Smoove - produced jam includes remixes by DJ Rush, Dean Coleman, and the team of Josh Da Funky 1 and Steve Smooth. Speaking of Dajae, Britton confirms that she's working on another single for the label, as well a "best of" collection that will feature a few bonus tracks. In early November, Kid Dynamite will issue Coleman's "the Vibin' House EP," which will include "All Right," "Stop," and "Do me," featuring Diggity Daj (aka Dajae) on vocals. The label will follow this with "The Ghetto Gospel Man" by the Ghetto Gospel Man (aka Chez Camier) in December. According to Britton, this release will mark Damier's farewell to clubland. "He's entering the world of gospel music," says Britton. |
